Face Up to Cancer is a new, Bethesda based organization currently pursuing 501(c)3 non-profit status. Our sole focus is to raise awareness and funds for eliminating the blight of cancer from the human experience. We focus on youth, education, and promoting healthier living to help prevent cancer. We teach young adults how to look for signs of cancer, as early detection is a key to successful cancer treatments. We want to change the image of cancer from that of an unbeatable monster to that of a curable and avoidable disease. We believe the key to this change is within our youth; our goal is to change trends and mindsets and eventually help cure cancer completely.
Everyone has a story
Everyone has a story...
This is Steves.
He was born Steven Ivan Galkin, but to those who know and love him he is our Stevie G..
As a husband, hes as close as you can get to Prince Charming
As a father, hes as close as you can get to a Super-hero
As a friend, lets just sayHe is the man!
In August 2009, Steve was diagnosed with an Esthesioneuroblastoma (a very rare nasal cancer.)
His tumor had grown beyond his sinuses, around his eye-socket and was pressing on the base of his skull.
That is when we ask ourselvesWhy do bad things happen to good people?
Not Steve. He looked at his situation as yet another obstacle that he must over-come. He Faced Up To His Cancer, just like he has faced up to everything else in his lifewith Dignity. He got up, dusted himself off, and said F U 2 CANCER.
Steve underwent 20 hrs. of surgery in 48 hrs.
The head and neck surgeon removed part of the tumor endoscopically and the neuro-surgeon removed the remainder of the tumor by a procedure called a craniofacial resection.
The tumor was gone!
Following his 4 week post-operatve recovery he would immediately begin radiation therapy 5 days a week for 2 months. Radiation is part of the cure for an Esthesioneuroblastoma. He would also receive 6 chemotherapy treatments. His team of doctors at Georgetown and Johns Hopkins decided to go with an extremely aggressive approach to attacking this cancer, mainly because of Steves age as well as otherwise being very healthy.
As of today, Steve is about 4 weeks post therapy and feels as though he has finally turned the corner. His recovery will be a slow process, but he is back to work and he can begin enjoying life again!
In February of this year he will have a follow-up MRI and Pet Scan to make sure that there is no more cancer. We feel extremely confident and have been reassured by his Dr.s that the cure rate is extremely high.
The Radiation Oncologist told Steve during the darkest days of his therapy that Short-term misery = Long term survival Those words will remain etched in our brains forever.
Through this whole process, in true Stevie G. fashion, he continued to put his wife and children first. Continually thanking me (his wife) for taking such good care of him, as well as making sure both of his children who are away at college always had whatever they needed whenever they needed it.
In closing
When we received the diagnosis, we were sending our last child off to college. We were about to begin the empty-nesting stage of our lives, and we had many plans. Thanks to all the brilliant and caring doctors and nurses, as well as Steves ability to stay positive, we will begin that phase soon enough. We look forward to a better life after cancer!
The Galkin Family
Yudu Recording Annie Sidley during her F U 2 C Presents: Annie Sidley
After losing a close family member to cancer while in college it was clear to me I had to do something about it. It was almost as if a bright light was put on cancer the horrible effect it has on so many families. Working at a recording studio I felt like I needed to apply my craft to this cause. After a chance meeting with Steve Galkin and hearing his story I was moved to join the F U 2 Cancer Project. I knew that the key to reaching the masses was through the youth, and an easy way to reach the youth was through music and the arts. We started the Face Up 2 The Music Project and that opened the doors for us to work with our partner program Swab a Cheek. I believe that the key to ending cancer is in educating young adults before they get cancer. Healthier living and smart life choices are the first steps to a cancer free world!
You can help with your time Talent or Treasure. It could be volunteer work at an F U 2 Cancer or partner event. If could be joining a program like the Face Up 2 Music Project where your music raises money for the American Cancer Society. It could be supporting F U 2 Cancer by purchasing one of our many products. If you or anyone you know has been affected by Cancer then you understand how far a little support can go. Here at F U 2 Cancer we feel it is important to make sure the money goes directly to the people who need the help. We also work closely with other non profits and groups who also share our goal of eliminating cancer. If you or anyone you know is currently fighting cancer, please contact us and we will do our best to help you with one or more of our programs.

INCWELL is a 25-year-old native of Washington D.C., born in and around capitol area suburbs. INCWELL blossomed from a broken home and two severely drug addicted parents one whom lost their life before INCWELL turned six years old. His all-too-common tragic upbringing has given him true perspective and a very distinct artistic candor. Since the age of 16, INCWELL, a.k.a Craig Carozza-Caviness (legal name) has held a special place in his heart for music. Although, until the age of 18, where he faced a few life-altering situations he did not believe he had what it took. Since then he has taken it upon himself to dedicate all this time to his true passion and future, music.

Refractory Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
At 27 in November of 2007 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. With a young daughter, she was four at the time, this was very scary. I have been through multiple types of chemotherapies and two different types of radiation. Nothing was working. The cancer kept growing. I had my first Stem Cell transplant in November 2008, it didn't work. The cancer grew more! This was supposed to be "the kind to have" "easiest to get rid of". HA! Now that's funny! If anyone ever tells you any type of cancer is "the one to have".... respond with, "well... I hope it's the kind you get then!" LOL. Currently I have been placed on a clinical trial, which is FINALLY WORKING!! I was beginning to think nothing was going to work. I will still need another 6 months or more of treatments and another transplant, a mini allo, this time.
